TRANSPORTATION

Picture of TRANSPORTATION

Transportation for the most part is mainly open air jitney (think long pickup truck back with a metal cover) that takes CASH. You will often inexplicably start getting the same driver or his cousin or nephew or son or uncle...you get the drift. These guys are incredible at knowing where you are, what you've been doing and if you've lost something..or someone! They are worth every cent to have them drive you. Parking is an absolute NIGHTMARE and the roads have some of the most hair raising switchbacks that are full of tourists who don't remember they need to STAY LEFT (as you drive on the opposite side in St. John). Get a driver if you're coming from town or going in. Did I mention parking (scream emoji)? If you do want to rent a jeep, do so immediately. It is a small island and they regulate how many cars are on the island (even though it doesn't seem like it - have I mentioned parking?) And if you drive - watch out for the donkeys. And the goats. And the massive pigs. Find yourself a great driver and make arrangements with them to get you around or hitchhike!! It is a very friendly island for hitchhiking. Don't hitchhike at night. We want you to be able to come back to the island :)

BEACHES and HIKING

Picture of BEACHES and HIKING

There are more beaches than days...some favorites are Hawksnest, Trunk, Cinnamon, Salt Pond Bay with varying levels of access and quality of snorkeling. Beaches to hike to include Honeymoon (easier hike) and Lameshur (off the Reef Bay Trail which has beautifully preserved petroglyphs, ancient sugar mill ruins for the rum and LOTS of hermit crabs). It is a 75-90 min hike going down - so be prepared for the way back up: bring your backpack w/everything needed for a swim, snorkel and nothing more but enough fresh water to drink. And then - there is of course OPPENHEIMER where we are staying. Bring snorkeling gear with you to the island if you can. Amazon is always having sales and its worth having your own - cheaper as well. Beach info is below and just scrapes the sandy surface. This link will show where people are for the day that I will fill in (provided that info is shared): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/138GWYY1BjbgjS3zUCQnocRgdSFOVV7oOSwDcsPUOzc0/edit?gid=1144212186#gid=1144212186

BARS and RESTAURANTS

Picture of BARS and RESTAURANTS

Restaurants are mostly either in Cruz Bay or Coral Bay (other side of the island). Cruz Bay Beach Bar; Longboard and Woody's are the icons and Skinny's in Coral Bay is the GOAT and been around the longest. That said, they really are pretty similar (Woody's is the classic island dive bar in Cruz and Skinny's in Coral). We will be going to the Windmill as a group (possibly on January 1) and eating at La Tapa after the ceremony. Windmill has the best view on the island (see here: https://explorestj.com/webcams/) and is worth going a few times. Arrive by 3:30p for a best seat for sunset. GROCERY STORES

HOLD ON TO YOUR EYEBALLS: St. John is a very tiny island that gets its food from another (albeit larger) island that gets its food from the mainland. Food is VERY expensive. It is never guaranteed that you will find your favorite of anything and if you do, you may be paying 5x more for it. Liquor and beer is expensive as well, except RUM - RUM is cheap! But you can find some deals if you're willing to vary what you eat or drink. It is not unheard of to visit a number of the shops to gather what you need. You CAN bring most food items into the USVI (can't take produce/plants out). We have always flown in with a variety of needed items and we've always brought too much! Check out this link for all the shops (they show STT as well, so ignore) and read the reviews: https://www.yelp.com/search?cflt=grocery&find_loc=Saint+John%2C+Virgin+Islands+00830 . This is more of a heads up than anything. Islanders are very very sensitive to hearing anyone complain about prices (and rightly so). It's tough eeking out a living on the island and we are just visitors.

Lime Out is the Caribbeans only floating taco restaurant. Accessible only by boat, which can be from a rented dinghy to their service. Lime Out is located on the quiet side of the island (opposite side from Cruz Bay) in Coral Bay.

STUFF TO CONSIDER WHEN PACKING.....

Bring as LITTLE as possible. I know. You MAY want to wear all the fancy and fun tropical outfits, but StJ is seriously one of the most laid back islands you can be on. I can get away with 2 pairs of shorts and 3 shirts and a bathing suit. I still bring too much. This list MAY not be comprehensive at all. Just some stuff we are thinking about right now...

So, here goes with some items that we have found to be helpful or necessary - in absolute ZERO order! OH!! And speaking of MAY. Jay and Megan started dating on MAY 8!

1) Reef Safe Sunscreen: the corals are struggling, as we are sure you are aware. Google reef safe sunscreen and you will find options. Lotion is required on the boat (keeps the spray from getting in the Captain's eyes).

2) Bug spray: the no see ums are what get ya. They aren't necessarily out all the time or even at all, but in case - bring a bottle/can. And Avon's Skin So Soft really does work.

3) Snorkel gear: nice to have your own and not have to rent. If you don't want to deal with it, I am sure there will be people to borrow from at times in a pinch. Bring anti fog stuff as well, unless your spit works. Mine doesn't ;)!

4) No need for beach towels :). You know why. Turkish towels dry so well and there are always towels in the rentals. Not sure about the hotels.

5) Laundry sheets or pods. Laundry sheets are so nice. They never bust open or melt. Clean Laundry and EarthBreeze are 2 to try.

6) BEACH stuff: Insulated cooler cup and coozies, hat(s), bsuit of course, beach bag (use on plane as carry on) large ziplock for wet stuff, sunglasses, small soft side foldable cooler if you have, if you bring a sunshield - make sure its not crazy big or use at back of beach

7) Cell phone emergency charger: you end up staying out all day and may need.

8) Shoes: flipflops and a pair of better shoes to walk in. From there - up to you.

9) Random stuff - mini speaker, ALL meds (they are $$$$ there), cash for transportation and airport cab drivers mainly (there's an ATM, but avoid the fee)

10) Dry food and ancillary items: this is a tougher one. Food is exxxxxpensive on the island and as mentioned somewhere else on this site, understandably so. But, that said, taking lightweight and what YOU deem necessary to have foods etc., it could be worth the additional bag or space in your existing bag. With ANYTHING you are thinking of and are not sure of - just ask us! We have taken entire frozen turkeys among many other things down in the past, but that is when we have had a big group going. Really just think what you HAVE to have or ask us if we think they will have it. Check out the food section above and go see what the markets 'can' carry (remember they may not have certain stuff in stock). We have also taken favorite or needed snacks, ziplocks, ice cube trays - or just buy ice - we buy a lot of ice, bottle opener, wine opener, mmmm...as we think of things, we will add here.
